Big start for Bayside in 2010

The year started with 24 participants from 13 primary schools and 7 secondary schools/institutions attending a TLfS workshop at the Hemisphere Conference Centre at Holmesglen College. The Bayside Glen Eira Kingston Local Learning and Employment Network (BGK LLEN) is a key partner of the TLfS program in the region and is investing funds, resources and expertise into the project to assist in its establishment in local schools. In addition, Bayside City Council has also generously provided some funding into the TLfS program in this region.

In 2008 and 2009 the TLfS program was successfully piloted in several local secondary and some primary schools, with outstanding results for the schools, teachers and students who took part. During 2010 TLfS will be piloted in primary schools in the Bayside, Glen Eira and Kingston region at no cost to participating schools. As part of this program schools will:

• Be able to send a school representative to a one-day professional development workshop which introduces the program and trains participants in how to use the program within their school

 

• Receive a comprehensive 'Teachers Workbook' containing detailed teaching modules, student activities and a map of all modules and activities to VELS and the E5 Instructional Model

 

• Receive a comprehensive 'Student Workbook' containing questions, activities and resources that encourage sustainability and leadership learning and development

 

• Receive support in identifying existing school programs or projects that could be linked to the TLfS program

 

• Receive support in identifying or developing new internal, community connected or business partnership programs or projects that could be linked to the TLfS program

 

• Have access to facilitated meetings (per term) with participants from other local schools, guest speakers and the TLfS developers

 

• Have access to the TLfS developers, Jane Stewart and Pat Armstrong, who have considerable expertise in environmental sustainability and leadership education, government and business projects and in supporting schools participating in the TLfS program across Australia

 

Since 2002 the BGK LLEN has been funded by the Victorian Government to assist in improving the education, training and employment outcomes of young people aged 15 - 19 years and assist Victoria in reaching a 90% Year 12 or equivalent completion rate by 2010. From 2010 - 2013, the BGK LLEN will now be funded by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development to support the education and transition outcomes of younger members of our community, from 10 - 19 years of age. In doing so, we hope to work closely with local government, catholic and independent primary schools to assist them in building capacity and establishing effective partnerships aimed at building upon their school's successes to date. TLfS is an initiative that we have evaluated as being a high quality partnership development, networking and capacity building program for primary and secondary schools.
