Keep Australia Beautiful Awards 2014 Finalist

The Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria (KABV) Sustainable Cities Awards recognise and celebrate positive actions taken by communities in urban areas to protect and enhance their local environments. They encompass initiatives as diverse as litter prevention, recycling, protection of the environment, preserving heritage, community action and leadership and environmental sustainability programs. The awards are a great opportunity to celebrate organisations excelling in sustainability and their achievements within the community.

Tomorrow’s Leaders for Sustainability (TLfS) at Montague Specialist School, delivered by the Port Phillip EcoCentre (PPEC) and funded by the City of Port Phillip (CoPP), were shortlisted for these awards in 2014 in the Active Schools category!  The TLfS Program has been delivered in this school over the last four years and has provided about 70 students with an education in sustainability while instilling leadership skills that have helped guide chosen careers.

The school now has a produce garden, compost, runs a healthy cooking program and puts students in touch with other sustainability programs.

Recent graduate Sam Belden said the TLfS program spurred him on to become a gardener and has since enrolled in Berendale Special School’s grounds keeping course.

Award winners were announced 1 August 2014 at a gala ceremony in Melbourne where the school principal, one of the leading student participants of the program, CoPP sustainability staff and the Education Programs Team Manager from the PPEC were in attendance.
