What do I have to do?

As a participant of the TLfS program, all students will have to complete the following;

  • Education Activities - complete all 15 Modules as delivered by your teacher
  • Project Activities - complete a project of your choice – with a group – and submit a Report.
  • Leadership Activities - present your project at least once in a public event – this could be a part of your graduation ceremony.

Or to expand this further - let’s look at each section in more detail.

Education Activities - the 15 Modules will cover the following topics;

Section 1: Leadership

  1. What’s it all about?
  2. What is leadership?
  3. What do you need to be a leader in sustainability?
  4. How can you think and plan like a leader?

Section 2:    Sustainability Issues and Principles

  1. What are some of the key principles and concepts of sustainability?
  2. What are some of the key sustainability issues facing the world?
  3. How can you find out more about sustainability?
  4. How can you make a difference in your own life to reduce your ecological footprint?

Section 3:    Conducting Your Sustainability Project

  1. What sustainability project would you like to undertake?
  2. How can you design, plan and deliver a successful sustainability project?

Section 4:    Working with others on Sustainability Projects

  2. How can you help to resolve problems and conflicts?

Section 5:    Communicating about Sustainability

  1. How can you communicate better?
  2. How can you give engaging presentations about your sustainability projects?

Section 6:    Sustainability and Careers

  1. How can you incorporate the principles of sustainability into your career?

You should find this information both interesting and thought provoking.  Some students who have done the course made the following comments.

  • Interesting, entertaining and informative.  I want to be more sustainable.
  • I really enjoyed it and I really learnt and achieved a lot.
  • It was great fun to learn as well as make friends.  I liked the projects and how we got to choose them.
  • It was different (in a good way) from most programs I've done in the past.  More people should do it.

Project Activities should be seen as an opportunity to work with some friends to investigate and/or experience something new.  It’s up to you and your teachers to work out when you should start your projects, but there is no reason why you can’t start while still going through the 15 Modules described above.

We understand that it might be difficult to choose a project topic, so we have created a list of possible ideas and even suggested some websites that might be useful as well.  Each project will need to be written up in the form of a report, but we have created a whole range of report sheets, milestone templates and other useful documents to help you as much as we can.  Of course, your teachers are there to help you, but when things get difficult you can also access experts such as scientists, business people and community representatives.

One student who completed the course and a group project said, I know it might seem hard, but once you have finished it, it will be something you can be proud of for the rest of your life.

Leadership Activities should be seen as a way to celebrate your achievements and practise some of your communication skills.  We understand

that you might get nervous at the thought of speaking in front of others, but we also know that there is no better audience than your teachers and parents who will be understanding of any nerves you might have.
